ACADEMIC PROGRAMS
The goal of Deer Creek Middle School is to help all students achieve their highest potential. We offer two pathways for student focus, Humanities and STEM, with enrichment and remediation as well as differentiated instruction within the classroom for all learners. STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES
Students must accept responsibility for their own success through their choices and actions:

  • Make school work a priority by completing assignments and preparing for assessments to the best of their ability;
  • Study and prepare for each day of school;
  • Give their best effort the first time and not just wait for a second chance;
  • Let teachers know when they need help and take advantage of extra help opportunities;
  • Utilize technology in an academic and appropriate manner;
  • Organize their work and materials.

Deer Creek’s programs and policies are designed to promote student achievement and accountability through support of Jeffco Generations skills, student choice, and social-emotional development.




STANDARDS-BASED GRADING
The focus of standards-based grading is to measure student mastery of the learning standards for the subject. There are two components to the gradebook in each class: the Content Knowledge grade and the Work Habits grade. The primary goals of standards-based grading and reporting are:

  • To assess and report what each student knows and is able to do in relation to curriculum content, which is aligned to district standards (Content Knowledge).
  • To demonstrate the connection of positive and consistent work habits and behavior to student learning (Work Habits).
  • To provide guidance regarding interventions needed for student success.



STUDENT PROFICIENCY and RETAKES
All students are expected to work toward proficiency. In order to demonstrate their understanding of the standards and learning objectives, students must demonstrate proficiency on related assessments. Teachers will provide multiple opportunities for students to demonstrate their proficiency in content knowledge on significant assignments, assessments, and projects, which may include alternative assignments or assessments.

  • In order to redo work, students may be required to meet additional conditions, such as obtaining a parent/guardian signature on the original work, attending help sessions, or completing corrections.
  • Because trimester grades are final, work turned in after the end of the term will not impact a previous grade. Additionally, assessments given at the end of the term may not be subject to retakes.



LATE WORK POLICY
All work is expected to be turned in by the class period that it is due. All teachers accept late work for full Content Knowledge credit before the final unit assessment within the current unit of study. Work turned in after the unit assessment will be marked as a zero.  The Work Habits grade will be impacted by work that is turned in late.




MAKE-UP WORK
For each day of absence, the student is allowed two days to make up work. The Work Habits grade will be impacted if the work is not made up in the allotted time.




ACCESS
* During the Hybrid Learning schedule, Access will only meet in the morning for the purpose of a soft start to allow students to enter the building and complete health and safety checks.
Access meets Monday-Thursday at the end of the day for students to access teachers and teachers to access students. Although it is a fluid part of the schedule, it is not a time without structure and expectations.

  • Students should utilize Access time in a productive manner that is not disruptive to other students in the classroom.
  • Students must obtain an Access pass during the day from the teacher they want to meet during Access.
  • Access passes can only be written by the teacher who is receiving the student, not the student’s Access teacher, to ensure that the receiving teacher is aware of and prepared for the student’s arrival.
  • All students must report to their Access teacher first for attendance purposes, and present a pass to go to meet with another teacher. By 2:45 (on our regular schedule), students who have passes to go to another location should have arrived and remain with that teacher until the end of the Access period.
  • Students that participate in counseling groups during set days of Access will report directly to the counselor conducting the session, whose responsibility it is to take attendance.



AFTER SCHOOL HELP
* During the Hybrid Learning schedule, extra help sessions will be scheduled on Fridays.

On Tuesdays after school until 3:55 PM, teachers are available for students to get extra help

  • Students should make arrangements with a teacher in advance to attend an after school help session to ensure that space is available and transportation is arranged.
  • An Activity Bus is available for students who pay the Activity Bus fee at registration or during the school year. 
    • The Activity Bus departs at 4:00 PM and runs an abbreviated route through Deer Creek areas that are served by the regular bus routes.
    • In order to ride the Activity Bus, a student must obtain a pass from the teacher they were working with.  Activity Bus passes are not available from the school office.
    • Students who are not attending a help session are not permitted to ride the Activity Bus. 




HONOR ROLL
Honor roll is awarded each trimester to students who meet the following criteria:

  • For High Honors, a Content Knowledge term grade point average (GPA) of 3.75 or higher AND Work Habits term grades of 3.0 or higher in all classes.
  • For Honors, a Content Knowledge term grade point average of 3.5 to 3.74 AND Work Habits term grades of 3.0 or higher in all classes.
